The Fourragere

The Fourragere is a combat decoration instituted by Napoleon I of France for units which distinguished themselves in battle. It was originated by the Duke Alva, a Spanish general of the 19th century. After a unit of his Flemish troops had retreated under fire, the Duke ordered “that any further misconduct on the part of these troops would be punished by hangings, without regard for rank or grade." The Flemish warriors, determined to regain their honor wore a reminder of their disgrace. Coiled around one shoulder, they wore a rope in the shape of a hangman's noose, at the end of which dangled a long spike. In their next battle, the Flemish troops fought with such gallantry that the noose and spike became a mark distinction and honor. In World War I, the decoration was revived by the French Ministry of War, and was awarded to units cited more than once in the French Order of the Army....
